7 steps
Step 1
Decide your monthly budget, the size and number of rooms, the area and how far you can commute. Remember to include service charge, utilities and the one-time deposit in your budget.
Step 2
Shortlist verified rentals and visit more than one. Ask an advisor to arrange the visits so you can compare in a day.
Step 3
Step 4
Make sure the person renting it out really owns it or is authorised to rent it. Ask to see proof of ownership or authority and their identity document. Landlords: verify your tenant's identity and keep a copy.
Step 5
Put everything in a written agreement signed by both sides.
Step 6
Before you move in, record the condition of the home with photos, note the meter readings and get a receipt for every payment, especially the deposit.
Step 7
Pay on time with a receipt, report problems early and keep the home in good order. When leaving, give the agreed notice, clear all dues and check the home with the landlord so the deposit is returned fairly.
